If you’ve ever watched a parade during Mardi Gras you’ve probably seen the routines of the color guard. But what exactly is color guard, and what makes it such a unique experience? Two Loyola students who perform with the Tulane University Marching Band share their perspectives.
“Color guard is a section of the band that is the visual ensemble,” member Sam Moloughney said. “We use flags, sabers, and rifles—tossing, spinning, and dancing. It’s so much fun.”
Eleanor Boucher-Ferry, another member of the Tulane Marching Band, explained that for her being part of the team is more than just mastering a skill.
“I love making friends, and I also love dancing,” she said. “It’s so fun to be on the field with all your friends, performing and hearing people cheer for you. You feel gorgeous. It’s just amazing.”
Similarly, Moloughney was drawn to the team because of their strong sense of community.
“I personally like the social aspect a lot,” she said. “The people are always really fun.”
Beyond teamwork, Boucher-Ferry explains that color guard also gives performers the chance to express themselves. She enjoys having this creative freedom because it allows her to incorporate unique moves to her routines.
“I like to make my arms really big, do a flourish where it sweeps out. I love doing stuff like that” Boucher-Ferry said.
For many, color guard is more than a performance—it’s a creative and emotional outlet.
“I think dancing is like therapy,” Boucher-Ferry said. “It helps you stay in tune with your body. Our spring showcases are especially exciting because we get to create our own routines. There’s so much room for leadership and creativity.”
Moloughney explained that being on the team has helped her grow personally.
“I have anxiety, and I hate performing in front of people,” she said. “But this is one of those experiences where you get a kind of high, especially when the crowd gives their energy back to you. It’s really cool.”
Whether it’s the thrill of performing or the bonds formed within the team, color guard offers a unique experience for each member.
